Bharatnatyam is a India's glorious classical dance style, which finds its roots in Tamilnadu. The poses and mudras of a Bharatnatyam dancer remind us of the beautiful sculptures found in ancient Hindu Temples. This dance of devdasis evolved as a ritualistic dance in the temples and later developed as a beautiful and versatile art form in modern India
Training in Bharatnatyam is provided by Mrs. Meenakshi Venkatraman and her senior disciples in the Pune Kendra twice a week.
Kathak is another major classical dance style of India. It originated in Northern India, and links its origion to Krishna's dance. Krishna danced vigorously on 'Kalia' serpent and tenderly with the gopis in 'Raasleela'. Thyus, an amalgamation of Tandav (masculine) and Lasya (feminine dance) produced Kathak Dance.
'Kathak' acquired its name from the story-teller priests in the temples (known as Kathiks) who used this dance style to depict mythological stories to preach the devotees.
Later Kathak was brought to the Courts of the Moghul (Uttar Pradesh) as well as Hindu (Rajasthan) Kings. This change brought in new kind of dance costumes in Kathak. It also helped it in becoming a highly entertaining artform.
Kathak's movements and expressions are attractive due to their unique abstract quality.
At the Pune Kendra, training in Kathak is provided by Dr. Shubhada Gokhale. Dr. Mrs. Shubhada Gokhale has received a doctorate in Kathak for doing extensive research on the potentials of Kathak as an artform that also helps in promoting physical, emotional and spiritual health of a person.
Classical Indian Music is of two types - Hindustani Music and Karnatic Music. Learning music is not mere entertainment for us Indians, as it is considered to be a 'Sadhana'. It is a worship to the Goddess Saraswati.
